Cinema on roof of Queensgate shopping centre is on cue for timely completion

The framework of a 10 screen cinema is taking shape on the roof the Peterborough’s Queensgate shopping centre.

Developers have been putting up the metallic shell of the Empire cinema that will form the focal point of a £60 million extension to the Queensgate centre.

It is understood the 18-month-long project is still on schedule to complete later this year.

Construction began last March to create the cinema-led development, which will also see the opening of a string of restaurants and retail units on levels below the cinema.

Much of the 77,000 square feet development occupies unused space in the John Lewis department store, which itself is at the centre of concern following reports that bosses of the retailer plan to close up to eight stores nationally in the near future.

The Queensgate development, which could create 200 jobs once completed, is being led by McLaren Construction, an international construction contractor which operates across the UK and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
