The injured chick was found in Southey Woods by Becky Fowler on Saturday. Now it is being looked after at a specialist centre, but Becky is raising money to look after the bird, which is thought to be either a red kite or a buzzard.

Becky said: “Whilst walking around Southey Woods in Peterborough, we discovered a beautiful bird of prey laying quietly amongst the tree felling works, that had recently occurred.

“He was very alert and didn’t seem too badly injured but he definitely couldn’t be left alone being so young.

“So wrapped up in a coat to keep him warm, we sat on a nearby log and started researching the internet for wildlife rescue centres.

“After failing to get through to several places we finally got through to Hill Farm Bird of Prey and Wildlife Rescue. They were happy to take him in and a short drive away and we arrived at the rescue.

“The man took a good look at him and felt all his wings. He said he had taken a bash to one side but should be ok. Tempting him with some food, he then explained that he thought he could be a Red Kite or possibly a Buzzard. The bird had the most amazing beak, large alert eyes and some big claws!

“The centre estimated that he was around two weeks old.

“He was popped into a carry box and tucked away somewhere quiet and dark to help him recover from the shock. At the time of holding him, he was very warm and had a nice regular heart beat so hopefully this means we found him in good time. The rescue centre had a good array of animals being looked after, everything from parakeets to snakes to a stoat that was being released in a few days!”

The fundraising campaign has already raised more than £100.
