Buses boss says a fall in passenger journey numbers in Peterborough is driving improvements
A buses boss in Peterborough says a fall in passenger journey numbers is driving transport providers to improve services.
The upbeat assessment comes from Darren Roe, managing director of Stagecoach East, after new figures revealed a 3.7 million fall in bus passenger numbers in Peterborough over the last decade.
According to the Department for Transport the number of bus journeys in Peterborough fell to 7.4 million for the year to last March – down 3.7 million on a decade ago when it stood at 11.1 million journeys.
However, the 7.4 million journeys is in line with the number of bus journeys taken ion Peterborough in the previous 12 months.

Darren Roe, managing director of Stagecoach East, said: “Although bus travel in Peterborough has decreased recently, this shift is helping highlight exactly where services need improvement.
"The drop in passenger numbers has encouraged all local transport leaders to rethink how routes are designed, focus investment and support where demand is strongest, and explore modern, more efficient transport solutions.
He said: “As a result, several services have already been reviewed, provided with additional support, or redesigned to better match what communities actually need.
Mr Roe said: “We know that the bus is a wonderful way to get about – being great value, convenient, and bringing social and environmental benefits – so, in Peterborough, we want to make it as appealing as we can.
"As such, we are continuing our special discount of just £5 adult for a DayRider discount until 31st December.
"That means unlimited travel for the price of a burger or a latte on the high street!
“You can get this great discounted fare for Peterborough Town DayRider tickets by going on to the Stagecoach App and using discount code EAPB5APPDAY.
"So, there has never been a better time to get out and do your Christmas shopping by bus, or to meet up with friends and family throughout December.”
A DfT spokesperson said: "Our Bus Services Act will revolutionise bus travel, handing back control of services to local authorities so they can design a network that works for passengers rather than profit."
