Burghley Horse Trials: Princess Anne presents prizes to top riders and horses

Former winner Princess Anne was on hand to present the prizes at the Burghley Horse Trials, after the best in the world wowed the large crowd.

Competitors and spectators travelled from across the globe to watch the world famous event at Burghley House.

Princess Anne – who won the event in 1971 – presented the first place trophy to Gemma Stevens, who won riding Chilli Knight.

After winning Gemma said: “This represents 25 years of work and finally I have managed to win a ‘big B’ [Burghley or Badminton]. We so nearly won Badminton a couple of years ago, and I have just known in my heart of hearts that there was a big win in this horse. We just needed our stars to align, and everything has aligned this week.”

It wasn’t just the competitive action that drew the spectators – there was plenty of going on for shoppers, with a range of stalls and retailers working during the week.

Photographer David Lowndes was on hand to capture the best of the action.
