BGL Group cheers on 50 Peterborough sports clubs with new sponsorship

A major employer in Peterborough has announced sponsorship for 50 local sports team over the next year.

Insurance giant BGL Group, in Bakewell Road, Orton Southgate, which employs 1,700 people in the city, has vowed to support 34 football teams, six cricket teams and four rugby clubs, two hockey clubs, a gymnastics club, a cycling team, an ice hockey team and a bowls club.

Peterborough United Football Club is the largest sports club to receive BGL’s ongoing support, with the Group set to sponsor the club for the next three seasons.

It also sponsors the family stand at London Road and the Peterborough United Foundation.

BGL is the main club sponsor for Peterborough Lions Rugby Club, with which it has a three-year deal.

Many of the clubs backed by BGL are grassroots sports sides.

These include Ketton Ladies football team, FC Hampton, Deeping United, Orton Rangers and Uffington Cricket Club.

Bushfield Bowls Club, based behind the Orton Centre, is also being sponsored by BGL, with the company funding 45 new shirts for its members.

The Youth Dreams Project, an education programme which aims to boost the life chances of a group of Peterborough teenagers through their love of football, is being sponsored for a second consecutive year.

BGL is also supporting its own sporting heroes.

These are Josh Myles, who plays for Peterborough Rugby Union Football Club, Nathan Pollard who plays ice hockey for Peterborough Phantoms, Peterborough Cycling Club cyclists Paul Pardoe and Jamie Murray and Paul Humphrey, who was recently selected for the England Touch Rugby High Performance Squad.

“We also recognise the many benefits participating in sport has for people of all ages and abilities which is why we’re delighted to continue our support for grassroots sports.”

Stuart Sharp, chairman of Orton Rangers Football Club, said: “BGL’s support has made a huge difference helping us with kit for our men’s, reserves and juniors.

“It means everyone looks the same and feels part of the club family in their kit and we’re able to continue to keep costs down and make being part of the club as affordable as possible.”
