Summers here in England are notoriously temperamental, but after three heatwaves so far it’s fair to say that the summer of 2026 has been an exception to the rule.
With a fourth spell of scorching temperatures expected this week, it’s key to make the most of the gorgeous weather while it's here.
It’s no secret that the urban nature of Peterborough means that the city can get pretty toasty hot summer days, which is why you should be plotting your escape.
Thankfully, the beautiful countryside surrounding the city provides a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
With clean air, rolling fields and cracking pub beer gardens, these picture-postcard villages have something for everyone.
You don’t have to travel far, either.
Within a 30-minute drive of Peterborough are some of the most beautiful and historic villages in the East of England.
Enjoy them, but don’t let everyone know!
Here are 7 of the best that you should consider visiting this summer:

5. Bulwick
Described by Visit Northamptonshire as “picturesque”, it’s hard to find a more appropriate word to sum up the village of Bulwick. Located just off the A43 between Stamford and Corby, the tiny village had just 153 residents at the time of the 2021 Census. Residents and visitors can purchase essentials at the Bulwick Village Shop; a thatched cottage that wouldn’t look out of place in an episode of Father Brown. Just a few feet away stands the village pub, The Queens Head, where visitors can stop for refreshments on hot summer’s days. Bulwick may sit just off the busy A43, but to the east of the village visitors will find mile upon mile of greenery, ideal for exploring at a leisurely pace. Photo: David Howard

6. Fotheringhay
Situated west of Peterborough on the banks of the River Nene, Fotheringhay is best known for its church, All Saints, which stands dominant above the flat landscape. The impressive building was rebuilt between 1411 and the 1430s as a college of priests. The remains of Fotheringhay Castle - founded around 1100 - can still be found in the village. 7. Castor
One of the most historically important villages near Peterborough, Castor is best known for its Roman links. Castor Praetorium was a huge Roman building which stood proudly on high ground on the northern edge of the Nene Valley. Built in 250AD, it was one of the largest Roman buildings in England. The herring bone foundations of the Praetorium can still be seen. Photo: Jonathan Thacker
