Peterborough City Council said the inspection showed the bridge appeared to be in a poor condition. After a further inspection it was determined that repair works needed to be carried out.

A council spokeswoman said: “As a safety precaution the bridge will be closed until the repair works can be completed.

“No start or end date have been set for the reparation works as yet. This is because the bridge is listed and in a conservation area, which means we need to source specialist contractors and materials - some of which can only be used at specific times of year.

“The diversion route is King Street, Girton Road, A15, Maxey Road, High Street, King Street, subject to street works approval.”
