Investigation continues into cause of large Peterborough fire

Police and fire crews are still investigating what caused a huge fire in Bretton which saw dozens of residents told to leave their homes in the middle of the night.

Just after midnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning fire fighters were called to fire on Hyholmes, North Bretton.

Crews arrived to find a substantial fire in a building affecting a gas mains supply, with some residents telling The Peterborough Telegrah flames were as high as the roof on some properties..

A large police cordon was put in place and residents were told to leave their homes, and taken to The Cresset for safety. Some were not able to return to their homes until Sunday afternoon.

No-one was injured in the incident.

Investigators are now still working to try and uncover the cause oft he blaze.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said; “Cadent (gas company) is continuing its investigation with help from our investigating officers and the police.”
