Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire forces, the Metropolitan Police, Lancashire Constabulary and Dyfed-Powys Police are among those who have said there is a problem and have provided alternative ways of contacting them online.

A message on the force website said: “Our 101 number is currently not working. This is a national issue and work is underway to rectify the problem. If you are in Cambridgeshire, please try calling 01480 456111 or 01733 563232 until the problem is resolved. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

The 999 emergency number does not appear to be affected.
