Former Land Army girl Gladys Elam celebrated her 100th birthday at her Stanground home with her daughter and great-granddaughter who were celebrating their birthdays too.

She married husband Bill in 1945, while he was in the Home Guard, and had two children - Eric and Carole Hudson, who celebrated her 70th last week.

She moved to Peterborough in 1980 and has been a widow since Eric died 10 years ago.

Carole, who lives next door to her mum, described Gladys as “independent” and “a typical outspoken Yorkshirewoman with a wonderful personality.”
