Residents in Peterborough complain of mounting rubbish smelling so bad they are unable to open their windows

Residents in Peterborough have raised serious complaints about mounting rubbish, with the smell becoming so bad they are unable to have their windows open.

Residents in Heltwate in Bretton have complained about issues with communal bins and mounting piles of rubbish, which appear to have been caused by a problem by a blocked chute.

With the chute, which is where the rubbish is usually disposed of, blocked rubbish has been building up in recent weeks with one resident describing the stench as “overpowering.”

The resident added that: “The underground chutes are a total failure. The current system is constantly full or blocked, rubbish is being dumped all over the floor. This is happening right on the doorstep of Heltwate School and the Best One convenience store. This isn't just an eyesore; it’s a full-blown health and safety hazard.

"This mess is on the main path for students and families heading to school. They shouldn't have to walk past rotting rubbish and vermin.

“Birds and animals are ripping these bags open daily, spreading filth across the pavement.

“The smell has become so overpowering that I cannot even open my flat windows to get fresh air.

“I have lived with this for years, and I’m tired of the "dump and run" culture that has been created because the bins aren't fit for purpose.”

While the council has arranged for the latest build up to be cleared, residents have said that this is a returning problem and that a permanent solution is needed rather that just temporary bins.”

Bretton ward councillor Richard Strangward said: “We have found that after a push, some bins turn up and they get taken away but the problem starts again, which is a real pain.

"On this occasion, we have contacted the council and the bins have been emptied and this is a short-term solution until the issue with the chute is resolved.

"We have asked for this to be fixed and I have also contacted Andrew Pakes, who has written to the council and Cross Keys to call for a permanent solution. This is an ongoing problem and it absolutely thinks in the hot weather.

"There needs to be bins there permanently or the chute is dealt with and fixed.”
