A spokesperson from the organisation said: “The Friends of Itter Park is disappointed that the actions of a small minority now means that a much-used park facility is out of action.

“The individuals concerned clearly don’t understand the impact such actions have on the public and the fundraising efforts of this group, who raised the money to have the table installed in the first place.

“The repairs are likely to be extensive and also expensive. However, there are still plenty of other facilities in the park and we would actively encourage you to enjoy them.”

A spokesman for Peterborough City Council said: “We have not seen a lot of vandalism in Itter park and hopefully this seems to be a one-off incident.

“The table tennis table is sat on a carpet-type material to enable it to be used all-year round and this has become ripped therefore we have put a cone over the damaged area and taped it off to prevent further issues.

“We have requested quotes for a repair to take place as soon as possible and are working with Friends of Itter Park to keep them notified as to progress.”
