Town councillor speaks of devastation after ram raiders hit Whittlesey again

A town councillor has spoken of the sense of devastation in Whittlesey after ram raiders struck at the Nationwide branch in the early hours of Thursday morning (November 5).

Police were called at about 3am with reports of an attempted ramraid at Nationwide in the town.

A police spokesperson said that officers attended but the suspects fled the scene.

Investigations are ongoing – but no arrests have been made.

The police spokesperson added that it doesn’t appear anything was taken – although damage at the scene indicated that the cash machine had been removed from the scene.

Road closures were put in place while investigations were carried out – and debris was removed from the scene.

A large JCB telehandler was left in the middle of the street following the attack.

It is the second time the branch has been hit by ram raiders in just a few years.

In October 2023, ram raiders caused significant damage to the building in a similar raid.

The Peterborough Telegraph spoke to cllr Bob Wicks, at the scene of the incident.

He said: “This is the second time it is happened in four years, and the impact on residents is going to be quite considerable, because it is not just the cash machine and access to money, it is the services that the staff provide in this branch. People will either have to go to Peterborough or March to conduct those transactions.

"The staff in there are long term, we know them personally, it is a community hub. It is a joy to go in, they have been raising money for various charities over the last couple of years – they are a key part of the whole town.

"It will be devastating. It is a vital service for the aging community, our demographics are on the high side here. People deal with cash because they have been brought up that way.”

The Peterborough Telegraph has contacted Nationwide for comment – including what will happen to services following the raid.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cambridgeshire Police, either online or by calling 101.
