The popular community growing project on the corner of London Road and Oundle Road was targeted over the weekend with another break-in then attempted last night.

The items taken were three power drills, which are used on a regular basis, and a generator which is used during events, as well as £100 in cash.

Green Backyard co-founder Sophie Antonelli had completed the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough last year which raised £350 for the drills.

She said: “It’s a shock for us.

“So many people have put so much energy in to keep us for the city and it’s really sad to be affected in this way.

“It takes us away from doing the other work that we want to be doing - working with people and improving the site.

“The response we’ve had from on social media, and from our neighbour looking out for us, was really encouraging. We won’t let this get us down.”

In July the Peterborough Telegraph revealed the big plans the Green Backyard had for the future, which include expanding the food offering and providing more opportunities for residents to have their wedding receptions at the site.

A number of recent improvements have already been made, including an upgrade to the car park, a new composting toilet and the running of garden-related courses.

Anybody wishing to donate to the Green Backyard can do so on its website.
