Thief jailed after being caught stealing £400 worth of goods from a Peterborough supermarket

A man has been jailed after he was caught trying to steal more than £400 worth of goods from a supermarket in Peterborough.

Cambridgeshire police say Gogita Letodiani (26) entered Tesco in Werrington, Peterborough, and filled a basket with various items.

A police spokesperson said that CCTV captured Letodiani taking items from the basket and putting them into a duffel bag he was carrying.

The spokesperson said: “When confronted by staff, Letodiani offered to put the items back, but he quickly became agitated and police were called.”

The incident occurred on September 22 last year.

Letodiani, of London Road, Southend on Sea, Essex, was jailed for one year at Cambridge Crown Court on May 5 after admitting to theft from a shop.

His sentence also relates to three other theft offences that took place outside the county.

PC Jessica Hirst, who investigated, said: “Letodiani made no effort to pay for the items, and believed he would get away with stealing more than £400 worth of items.

“We understand how frustrating and disruptive these crimes are for shop workers and business owners.

"We’re committed to working closely with retailers to tackle shoplifting and ensure those responsible will face justice.”
