People living in parts of Woodston and Fletton said they were woken by the loud bang just after 11.30pm.

A number of theories popped up on social media, with some saying it could have been gunfire, and others saying it might have been works taking place on the railway in the area, which are scheduled for this week.

Cambridgeshire police were able to shed some light on the mystery. A spokesman said: “We received several calls at about 11.45pm last night (Wednesday 17 June) reporting a very loud bang which came from the Hotpoint factory in Celta Road, Woodston.

“It is believed the noise was fireworks which came from over the bridge and not the factory.”
