Peterborough PC rescues injured man from sports car moments before it burst into flames

A brave Peterborough police officer put his own life at risk to pull a man free from the wreckage of his car moments before it burst into flames.

At about 2.45pm on New Year’s Day, PC Chris Cawdery was on patrol in Peterborough when he came across a serious collision.

A man, 38-year-old Jaimish Shah, was trying to get out of his white Jaguar with serious leg and pelvis injuries after the car had left the Soke Parkway.

PC Cawdery ran over to the vehicle, which had smoke coming from of it, and pulled Mr Shah away from it before paramedic Paul Walton, who was the first paramedic on scene, helped PC Cawdery to move Mr Shah further away from the vehicle just moments before it caught fire, undoubtedly saving his life.

Chief Inspector Karen Newton said: “I would like to commend Chris for his selfless actions – he put a member of the public’s safety before his own which resulted in him saving a life.

“The brilliant team work demonstrated by both Chris and Paul just goes to show the effects partnership working can have – without the joint effort, it may have been a very different outcome for Mr Shah who may still have been very close to the vehicle when it ignited.”
