Peterborough motorcycle yobs’ behaviour could have ‘tragic consequences’

While many in the Ortons were hoping for a quiet weekend indoors, motorbike riders shattered the peace as they tore along paths and pavements.

The issue of anti-social riding and driving is not new to the Ortons, but with more people staying at home due to the COVID-19 crisis, it is feared the behaviour could impact more people this spring.

Earlier this month patrols were stepped up in the area to deal with the problemVideo footage taken shows a number of people pulling wheelies along the roads, and swearing at residents.

Despite the police being called, no arrests were made, and Orton Waterville ward councillor, Julie Howell, said the behaviour could have ‘tragic consequences.

She said: “This went on all afternoon Saturday and Sunday.

“Residents who are observing the advice to stay indoors are telling me the noise is giving them a lot of anxiety.

“I’m not convinced this has anything to do with the weather.

“The individuals involved are well-known within the community and are more likely taking advantage of a very difficult situation to cause people to feel more anxious and upset.

“They don’t understand the risk they are posing to themselves and others.

“But what seems funny now could have very tragic consequences.”

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: “We received calls in relation to teenagers riding motorbikes on footpaths in Orton Malbourne and Orton Goldhay between 1pm and 4pm yesterday (22 March).

“Local officers were made aware.

“No arrests were made.”
