Claire Matthews, prosecuting, told the court after the victim, a woman in her 60s, contacted police, Waters admitted his offending in police interview.

She said: “He said he behaved like an idiot, and knew she (the victim) was not consenting.

“He said they were acts of stupidity.”

She said the assaults had a ‘significant impact’ on the woman.

Mauro Maselli, defending, said a suspended sentence would be a suitable punishment.

He said: “I ask for maximum credit for his guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.

“He is a 57-year-old man, with no previous convictions. He has no intention of coming back before the courts 0 in his own words he has learnt his lesson.

“He is the full time carer for his partner, who remains supportive.”

But Judge Sean Enright said he had no option but to send Waters to prison for 16 months.
