Peterborough man arrested after trying to escape by swimming down River Nene

A man wanted for criminal damage tried to make a getaway by diving into the River Nene.

At about 1.50pm yesterday (14 June), Police received reports of criminal damage at a hotel in Wentworth Street, Peterborough.

A police spokesman said the man then tried to get away by swimming along the River Nene - with a large presence from emergency services attending Town Bridge.

A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal damage at about 2.30pm in Viersen Place. He has since been released under investigation.
