Peterborough driver avoids ban as she and mum are vulnerable to COVID

A Peterborough motorist has avoided a driving ban because she and her mother are vulnerable to coronavirus.

Mariama Jalo (30) was caught driving a VW Golf on Bourges Boulevard with no insurance on September 18 last year.

She appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court last week, where she pleaded guilty to the charge.

She was given six points on her licence, taking her over the 12 points that would normally result in a ban.

However, magistrates said there were mitigating circumstances, and a ban would cause exceptional hardship.

he court heard Jalo was a mum and carer for three children, and was expecting a fourth child, and was also a carer for her mum, who had health issues. The court heard both Jalo and her mum are clinically vulnerable to COVID, and using public transport would put them at increased risk.

Along with the six points Jalo was fined £100, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30, and costs of £110.
