Terry’s Cycles in Mancetter Square, Peterborough, has helped keep cyclists - including NHS workers travelling to and from Peterborough City Hospital - on the road during the lockdown.

But last night raiders used a van to smash through the front of the store, before stealing a number of bikes.

Today Paul Bonham, owner of the shop, said he had been devastated by what happened.

He said; “At 2.30am last night I had a call from our security company, who said someone had broken in.

“By the time we got here, the police were already here.

“The raiders had backed the van through the shutter and into the front of teh shop, and stole five or six bikes. They caused about £60-£70,000 of damage.”

The shop has been able to remain open during the lockdown to keep people active, and to service and repair bikes of key workers - and the popular shop has now been inundated with people coming to help them in their hour of need.

Paul said: “We have had lots of offers for help. It is not easy to get the building repaired at times like this, but we have had a number of people come in and offer to help. We have three guys here at the moment fixing it up. Everyone has been fantastic in coming to help.

“The police have also been very helpful today.

“We are trying to stay open for business as usual.

The shop has now passed CCTV over to the police, and Paul said the culprits used a white Transit type van. He said there were four people, all who looked like they were aged in their early 20s.
