Cambridgeshire police said reports had been made over the cold call con.

A police spokesman said; "The scam begins with a cold call where the person claims to be a High Court Enforcement Officer asking to speak to the Managing Director by name as a matter of urgency.

"The caller claims the matter relating to unpaid HMRC debt is due before the courts imminently and in order to deal with the issue, the company must pay £8,997 to a solicitor at the court, who will hold the funds while the matter is disputed.

"The caller cleverly uses the name of a bona fide solicitor registered with The Law Society, as well as the name of a genuine debt recovery agency used by HMRC.

"This is a scam.

"HM Courts and Tribunal Service will never phone and ask for bank details or ask you to make a bank transfer."
