Nearly 400 Covid fines issued by Cambridgeshire police

Nearly 400 fines for breaches of coronavirus laws have been issued by Cambridgeshire police.

In total, the force has handed out 387 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) between March 27, 2020 and January 17, according to the latest published figures.

In England and Wales 42,675 FPNs have been issued over the same time period.

During the first national lockdown police in England issued an average of 1,424 FPNs per week, while in the first two weeks of the current national lockdown they issued an average of 1,784 (25 per cent higher).

Of the fines handed out in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire, three were for holding a gathering of more than 30 people, 22 were for a breach of face covering regulations, seven were for a breach of international travel regulations and one was for a breach of business regulations.

Lincolnshire Police have handed out 490 FPNs, while Northamptonshire Police have handed out 1,299.

In England, people aged 18 or over can be fined £200 for a first offence, lowered to £100 if paid within 14 days.

This can be doubled up to a maximum of £6,400 for further breaches.

Large parties can also be shut down by the police with fines of up to £10,000.
