Matthew Warner, 22, of no fixed address, was sentenced to four months in prison for breaching a court order and assaulting a police officer. The assault, which happened on May 11 at a home in Deeping St James, left the officer with markings and swellings on his neck after he was grabbed round the throat by Warner.

Chief Insp Phil Vickers said, “I would like to pay testament to the officer and his colleagues who came to his assistance. Their reaction to the escalating situation was swift and brave, and they dealt with the challenge with the utmost professionalism. It’s our job to protect and serve but I am truly proud of the way in which these officers responded in the face of danger. Sadly an assault on one of our staff is not uncommon.”

Between 23 March and the 5 May there were 47 assaults on officers recorded.
