Cambridgeshire Police said an 18-year-old man, who was believed to be driving the car, has still not been found.

A force spokesperson explained: “The car, which contained four other people, aged between 16 and 18, entered the water at North Brink, in Wisbech St Mary, at about 8.20pm.

“Specialist dive teams recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl, who was believed to be a rear seat passenger in the car, yesterday afternoon (18 March).

“The three other people involved – two girls aged 16 and an 18-year-old boy - got out of the vehicle and were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in King’s Lynn, with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The 16-year-old girl remains in hospital today while the other two have been discharged.”

North Brink, which was closed while emergency services were at the scene yesterday, has been re-opened.

Detective Chief Inspector Garry Webb, from the road policing unit, said: “This is a terrible tragedy, and we are supporting all the families and the young survivors through what is a traumatic time for them all.

“Our priority today is to find the young man who remain unaccounted for and specialist search teams remain at the scene.

“Detectives from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit also remain at the scene and they will continue engagement with the survivors and all the families affected.”

Anyone who witnessed what happened, saw the vehicle just prior, or has dashcam footage is urged to report it through the force website, referencing incident 515 of 17 March.
