Eight e-scooters seized in two hours in Ortons as police crack down on menace

Eight e-scooters were seized in just a couple of hours in a Peterborough neighbourhood as police cracked down on the menace caused by riders.

As one of their neighbourhood priorities, Cambridgeshire Police are looking to clamp down on the anti-social use of motorbikes and scooters at the Herlington Centre in Orton.

As part of this, they carried out an operation on Friday evening (May 15) to target the illegal use of e-scooters, specifically on the busway between the Orton Centre and the Herlington centre.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “Over a couple of hours, eight e-scooters were seized!

“This may seem like a waste of time to some, but we have had a large number of complaints from residents about the use of e-scooters and the disregard they have for pedestrians and other road users.”

Police have also issued a reminder on what the law says regarding the use of e-scooters.

The spokesperson said: “One thing we noticed when speaking to those we saw was that they were unaware of the law around these vehicles, so here is a reminder:

“They are classed as motor vehicles, which means to legally use one, you need the correct licence, insurance, and tax. Riding without this could result in being given a fixed penalty notice and points on your licence

“It is not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters in the UK, meaning it is illegal to use them on a public road or in public spaces

“If you own an e-scooter, you can only legally use it on private land with the permission of the landowner.”
