Coronavirus: Police stunned after driver heads to Peterborough for catch-up with friends

Traffic police were left stunned after pulling over a driver who admitted he was heading to Peterborough to catch-up with friends, despite strict rules in place to stop social gatherings.

Officers patrolling the M1 southbound at Junction 8 stopped a car just after midday to find out details of their journey, with motorists having been ordered to only carry out essential journeys to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Explaining what happened next, the BCH Road Policing Unit said: “The driver lives in Spalding and was going to pick up a friend from London and then drive to Peterborough to see others.

“Really, is this essential? Come on people, Covid-19 is a killer. Stay at home.”

Asked what action was taken, a police spokesman said: “The driver was given some words of advice.”
