Coronavirus: Police issue scam warning following Stamford incident

Lincolnshire Police said: “On Monday we received a report that a motorist was flagged down by a man driving a black Audi, on Barnack Road.

“After she had stopped, he then proceeded to ask the woman for Covid-19 paperwork.

When the motorist asked the man to see his identification, he said he did not have any. She then drove off from the scene.

“Although the motorist in this case did not lose any property or money, the risks of coronavirus-related scams remain during the pandemic.”

Chief Inspector Andy Morrice added: “This was an unsettling incident for the motorist and shows that unscrupulous individuals could use the coronavirus situation to exploit others.

“There are several different scams operating nationally, often emails attempting to trick people into revealing sensitive personal or financial information.

“Never give these details to people or companies that you do not know or trust. There is nothing wrong in being cautious, or asking family and friends for advice first.

“Coronavirus has presented an opportunity for fraudsters and scammers, and I would urge members of the public to take extra care and check the Action Fraud website for more details and advice.”
