Shoplifter jailed after stealing goods worth £1,300 in separate thefts in Peterborough

A shoplifter who repeatedly targeted stores in Peterborough and stole goods worth hundreds of pounds has been jailed.

Cambridgeshire police say that Soma Deasley (37) of no known address, was jailed for 26 weeks and ordered to pay £800 compensation after a shoplifting spree.

Deasley had admitted eight counts of theft from a shop and one of attempted theft from a shop during a hearing at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on April 22.

A police spokesperson said that Deasley had gone to Next at the Brotherhood Retail Park, Lincoln Road, on April 12 where he stole diffusers worth £200.

The spokesperson added: “He then returned to steal almost daily until he was arrested on April 21 by the force’s Spree Offender Team.

“Deasley stole candles and diffusers worth a total of more than £1,300 over six separate thefts.”

Police also say that on April 4, Deasley also attempted to steal food and drink from the BP garage in Bretton Way but was stopped by staff.

The spokesperson said: “Undeterred, he stole from them the following day, as well as taking alcohol from Morrisons, in Lincoln Road, as part of a separate four-day spree."

After the court hearing, PC Rebecca Risebrow, from the Spree Offender Team, said: “Deasley was relentless in targeting the same shop almost daily to steal high value items.

“He knew exactly what she was going to steal in these repeated, pre-meditated, crimes.

“This type of behaviour is incredibly frustrating for retail staff and we’re working closely with local businesses to tackle the issue.”
