Shoplifter jailed after spate of alcohol thefts from supermarkets in Peterborough

A man who repeatedly stole alcohol from supermarkets in Peterborough has been jailed.

Cambridgeshire police say that Aaron Cliff (29) went to Tesco, in Serpentine Green, Hampton, where he stole four bottles of spirits on October 31.

Police say that five days later, on November 4, Cliff went to Sainsbury’s, in Oxney Road, where he took alcohol worth £205, before going to TK Maxx, in Queensgate, to steal gift sets.

A police spokesperson said: “The following day he returned to the same Sainsbury’s, where he again stole bottles of spirits.

“Cliff, of no known address, was detained by security staff, police were called and he was arrested.”

Cliff was jailed for eight weeks at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on March 6 having admitted four counts of theft from a shop.

Afterwards, PC Emma Roberts said: “I’m pleased Cliff was detained by staff and has now been sentenced following his persistent offending.

“Retail crime has a significant impact on businesses, staff and the wider community, and we know how frustrating it is for people at shops who are repeatedly targeted.

“We take these offences seriously and we will continue to work with retailers to identify those responsible and bring them before the courts.”
