The Way In Community House was set up 25 years ago by Werrington Parish Church and provides a mother and toddlers group, lunches for elderly residents and crafts sessions.

The recycling scheme gives residents the chance to reward a community project by earning the most ‘green points’ through actions such as buying from the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Re-Use facility.

The scheme was set up by Peterborough City Council in partnership with Amey, the company which manages street cleaning and environmental services.

Since the launch, recycling rates have risen in each of the areas which have taken part.

The biggest rise of 18 per cent has been seen in North Bretton.

The Peterborough Foodbank and The Green Backyard, who came second and third in the scheme, will also receive money to support their community work.

Community groups can get involved in the scheme by ringing 01733 425310.
