It is run by husband and wife team John and Della McGinn, and John said: “I am thrilled to have won this.

“The pub was closed for four years before we bought it five years ago. It is a long project, but it is great people recognise what we are doing.

“I think people like us because we are an independent, free house, local pub. Everything we do is controlled by us - we speak to our customers and adapt to what they want.

“When we took it over, we wanted to make it the sort of place we would want to come to, a relaxed, informal pub with good food and good beer.

“It really is important to support your local pub - there are fewer and fewer places for people to get out of their homes and socialise. I know four pubs in Whittlesey have been closed recently, so it is a tough business.”

The Peterborough Telegraph Pub of the Year competition saw dozens of locals nominated, before the list was whittled down to a final 10 which had received the most nominations.

The runner up was the Fitzwilliam Arms in Stamford Road, Marholm, with third place being awarded to the Letter B in Church Street, Whittlesey.
