Cause of fire which ripped through historic Stamford School building revealed

The cause of a fire which ripped through a historic building at Stamford School has been revealed.

Smoke billowed through Stamford on Friday as the blaze caused major damage to the Principal’s house at the school.

No-one was hurt in the blaze, but crews were on the scene for several hours.

Today Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had been caused by a ‘mains electrical fault in the loft space,’ while a spokesman for Stamford School said the fault was most likely caused by a mouse chewing through wires.

Following the blaze, Hannah Hamilton, Director of External Relations at the Stamford Endowed Schools, said: “We are shocked and devasted by the serious fire on the Stamford School site.

“Everyone on site was evacuated immediately and we are immensely thankful that no-one was hurt.

“The fire started on an upper floor of the Principal’s house and took hold very quickly. We are extremely grateful to the emergency services for their swift actions, which helped to contain the fire and prevented it from doing even more damage. It will take some time to establish the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage, but we will be in touch with our community with further information once more details are known.

“Provision for Year 10 and 12 pupils who are returning to School on Monday is unaffected.

“Our sincere thanks to everyone in our community who offered their help and support during the fire.”
