The first will take place in the city centre on Cathedral Square on Saturday between 11am and 6pm. There will be live music, poetry readings, African clothing, food stalls and arts and crafts.

The theme for 2016 is ‘Africa, Mother of Mankind’ with a celebration of heritage and culture.

Bernadetta Omondi, from the Black History Month Committee, said: “We believe in community cohesion, integration and tolerance. Our theme this year will highlight that we are all ‘one’ regardless of our differences.

“We would love to see as many people at the events as possible so we can explore our cultural customs together. One in particular is the idea of ‘Umoja’ which is an African expression meaning to be equally concerned about one another as you are of yourself.”

Other events include games of dominos, storytelling and food at the Millennium Centre, Dickens Street, from 2pm on October 8, a fashion show at the Dominion Christian Connections, Park Road between 2pm and 6pm on Saturday, October 22, and other activities at Peterborough City Hospital on Wednesday, November 9 between 1pm and 3pm.
