Double the fun: Woburn’s Land of Lemurs welcomes twins

See young Lemurs spending time away from their mum, as they learn to climb and jump around this summer.

Keepers recently welcomed wonderful new arrivals to the Land of Lemurs walk-through. Two critically endangered white-belted ruffed lemurs joined the park and two endangered ring-tailed lemur babies were born to mum Kirindy. They are only found on the island of Madagascar and their wild populations are threatened by hunting and deforestation.

Recent arrivals - father-and-son-duo - Asotry and Bary the white-belted ruffed lemurs, will live alongside the black-and-white ruffed, ring-tailed and red-bellied lemurs in their woodland home at Woburn, helping to educate visitors about the threats lemurs face in the wild.

The pawfect first date: Amur tigers meet for the first time at Woburn

Five-year-old male tiger Dmitri and 12-year-old female tiger Minerva have been introduced for the first time at Woburn Safari Park this summer.

Keepers are delighted that Dmitri and Minerva (known as Vera) have taken such a shine to each other and are hopeful they may successfully breed, as part of the Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

Dmitri arrived at Woburn Safari Park from ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and keepers have helped him to transition from a zoo to a safari park environment, building his confidence in the expansive woodland reserve.

This summer, visitors can spot Dmitri and Vera, or even the 'pawfect' couple together when they’re ‘dating’, in the Kingdom of the Carnivores drive-through, in the Road Safari at Woburn Safari Park.

Cracking news as three penguin chicks hatch

Keepers have been celebrating ‘cracking’ news down at Humbolt Harbour, as the park welcomed the arrival of three new Humbolt penguin chicks!

Experienced parents Leaf and Salsa, who have successfully reared a number of young at Woburn as part of a European endangered breeding programme, welcomed two chicks called Sriracha and Pesto. Tank and Arrow, another bonded penguin pair, also welcomed a chick together for the first time, who has been named Apache.

Humbolt penguins are listed as ’vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List, meaning they are considered to be at high risk of extinction in the wild.

Keepers were able to capture footage of the chicks whilst still in their burrow – as the team have been carefully watching over the growing brood.

The penguin chicks were very vocal while still in the burrows their parents had dug to lay their eggs in. They have now started to emerge and are recognisable by their distinctive brown and grey colouration, which they will keep for the first year of their lives.

They won’t stay this little for long, so be sure to look out for these adorable chicks on your next visit!
