“Hearing this operatic and stirring piece of music in the splendid setting of the Cathedral promises to be a memorable experience,” said Steven Grahl.

“People may already be familiar with the thundering Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) section from TV soundtracks, but it is even better performed live – come and hear it!”

Tickets for the performance range from £15 to £25 (under-18s half price) and are available online via www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk, or from Peterborough Information Centre on 01733 452336, Oundle Box Office 01832 274734 and Stamford Arts Centre on 01780 763203.

Every three years the Stamford Endowed Schools Choral Society and the Stamford Choral Society join forces for a concert at the cathedral in recognition of the links between Stamford and the great conductor, Sir Malcolm Sargent.

This year they perform Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’, which is famously neither little, solemn nor especially liturgical in spirit.

The Chameleon Arts Orchestra will accompany the singers.

The soloists are Jenny Saunders (soprano), Cerys Purser (mezzo soprano), Mark Chaundy (tenor), and James Newby (bass) and the conductor is Giles Turner.

Tickets: Nave £15 (£14), Side Aisles £8 (£7), children £5, available from Stamford Arts Centre on 01780 763202, or via www.stamfordartscentre.com, Peterborough Information Centre on 01733 452336, and Stamford Endowed Schools Box Office via www.ticketsource.co.uk/ses, or on the door.
