Barmach Limited has received the go ahead from Peterborough City Council to convert the upper floors of 12 Cowgate into self-contained apartments.

The building is currently vacant other than for part use of the first floor as offices.

Under the plans the bottom floor will retain its retail use.

The original proposal was for 11 flats, but this was revised “following concerns raised that the proposed layout would not afford future occupiers an acceptable level of amenity through noise disturbances and cramped/small accommodation,” the council said.

The council’s highways department had objected to the plans as it would be “difficult to manoeuvre cycles in/out of the storage room,” but the planning department concluded: “Although it is agreed that there would be difficulties in manoeuvring cycles in and out of the building, it is not considered to be totally unacceptable.”

Colemans closed at the end of April 2019 after 36 years trading in the city.
