Regional housebuilder Allison Homes East is promoting sustainable living at its Abbey Park development in Thorney, Peterborough, where all the homes have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A.

Situated off Deer Park Way, Abbey Park consists of a stunning range of 68 three and four bedroom detached homes, which all feature solar panels and EV charging points as standard.

An EPC rating is used to measure a building’s energy efficiency. Properties receive a score from A to G, with A being at the top of the scale and demonstrating that the home reaches the highest levels of energy efficiency.

On average, 86 per cent of new build homes are rated A or B, whereas less than five per cent of older homes have the same score*. Just over seven per cent of new homes are rated A, compared to only 0.30 per cent of existing properties*.

The homes at Abbey Park have achieved this rating due to the use of solar panels and a system called Waste Water Heat Recovery (WWHR). This system re-uses heat from hot water that would usually run down the drain after a shower to pre-heat the fresh, cold water coming into the home.

Allison Homes East’s properties also feature a Flue Gas Heat Recovery (FGHR) device that collects heat which would normally go through the flue (a duct or pipe) and be wasted. This heat is recycled back through the boiler to help heat up cold water. By using both WWHR and FGHR systems, the boiler doesn’t need to work as hard to heat water up, resulting in lower energy bills.

By purchasing a new build house, homeowners can save over £1,980 a year and £165 a month on their energy bills*. These savings result in residents having energy bills that are 65 per cent cheaper than bills for older properties*.
