It’s National Fish & Chip Day!
Not that we really need an excuse but today is all about celebrating that most quintessentially British of culinary treats – the fish supper.
Normally held on the first Friday of June, this year’s celebrations are taking place today as a way of honouring the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Of course, we are quite fortunate here in Peterborough as we have a wealth of top-notch chippies, both within the city and in surrounding villages and towns, to choose from.
So which ones should you be heading out to this evening to celebrate this most auspicious of days?
Well, according to Tripadvisor – the world’s largest travel platform – there are currently ten fish and chip shops in or around the city boasting a rating of at least 3.5 out of 5.
Perhaps your favourite chippy is one of them?
If not, then now is the perfect time to strike out and find a new plaice to enjoy a pukka feed!

5. Fryz Fish and Chips
Tucked away in the far corner of Bretton Centre, Fryz Fish and Chips is regularly lauded as a highlight of any trip out to this perennially busy shopping area. Understandably busy at times, the place at number nine on our list still earns an impressive 4/5, with one pleased reviewer describing it as a "diamond gem of a fish and chip shop." 6. Friar Tucks
Making it a hat-trick on the top ten list for Whittlesey, Friar Tucks does exactly what you want a neighbourhood chippy to do: serve tasty, good-sized portions to the same specifications, every single time. The cheery eatery's tasty battered sausages and perfectly-sized pensioner deals earn persistent praise as it sizzles into the number six spot. Photo: Friar Tucks

7. Fishtastic
Set among the glass-fronted units of Bellona Drive, Fishtastic is, from the very outset, a sleek and modern affair compared to most traditional chippies. Other modern twists, such as environmental conscience packaging, have also won plaudits from reviewers, although an evident lack of seating is cited as an issue for some. Photo: Google

8. The Golden Cod
Coming in at #8 is this long-standing favourite on Crawthorne Road. A popular chippy close to the centre of town for more than 40 years, The Golden Cod has seen generations of customers queue up for a tasty fish and chip takeaway to go and eat in nearby Stanley Park. Decent fish sizes and generous chip portions earn it an enviable 4/5. Photo: Google
