I ate pig's ear - and so much more - after finding this great Peterborough restaurant

Ok, that’s the headline out of the way!!

Yes, pig’s ear was on the “beer snack board” I tucked into while chatting with the owners during a long-overdue visit to Kaimas, near The Triangle on Lincoln Road in Peterborough.

It is a place that I have known about since it opened 15 years ago, serving the growing Lithuanian community in the city.

It still retains the “Lithuanian restaurant” title on the sign outside but the place – and the menu - has changed with the times, and its growing cosmopolitan customer base, to serve a more rounded, modern European offering.

There’s burgers, pizzas, steaks, chops, omelettes, and happily for the purposes of my first visit plenty of traditional eastern European dishes.

Which is where I started, keen to experience what the Kaimas team has been doing after coming across their food truck at a recent festival.

Kaimas translates as “village” and the restaurant certainly has a rural appearance from the outside, and inside the decor and tables and bench seating add to that rustic feel.

The previously mentioned beer snack board (there are a couple of snack boards to choose from) is aimed at those who like to nibble while sat having a drink, which is pretty much what I was doing.

The slithers of pig’s ear were ok, a bit chewy of course but with a definite meaty flavour, while the smoked pork was something I could happily try again.

There were a couple of tasty cheeses and pickled gherkins too, that went down well.

Another dish designed for snackers was the incredibly moreish toasted rye bread in a thick, gooey garlic sauce. Not easy to grab even with a cocktail stick, but once I got the hang of it stopping proved tricky!

But I knew there were more culinary delights ahead.

I was tempted by the cold beetroot soup, which I have eaten elsewhere, but instead was served up an enormous potato dumpling which was an odd, spongy consistency – the flavour enhanced by the topping of rich pork lardons in a sourcream. The mushroom sauce topping was great too.

In the middle of the dumpling was a flavour-packed pork mince.

I saved the best to last, to be fair – grilled pork ribs.

The meat was soft, plentiful and falling off the bone with a delicious barbecue sauce adding to the pleasure.

It was served with creamy mashed potatoes, that soaked up the sauce, carrots and cabbage and a little sweet tomato salad.

Quite a feast.

Which sums up Kaimas perfectly – great food and big portions, all prepared in house.
