'End of an era' as Sir Henry Royce pub and former home of Yates's in Peterborough closes down

Prominent Peterborough city centre pub the Sir Henry Royce has closed its doors for the final time.

The pub on Broadway faced an uncertain future after the Craft Union Pub Company confirmed in January that it would not be renewing the lease.

Operator Michelle Young described the situation as “heartbreaking” and immediately launched a campaign to do all she could to save the pub and bring it into family ownership.

Plans included creating a vibrant community pub hosting a range of events and live music.

A fundraising campaign was started with the goal of £80,000 but there was only a tight deadline; meaning funds would have to be found by the beginning of February.

Unfortunately, the required funds could not be found and the pub has now been closed.

Michelle said: Sadly, we could not find the money and the pub has been closed. It is the end of an era.

“It’s heartbreaking. This was not just a job for me, I am very, very passionate about this place and my customers. I was there seven days a week and it’s not just a place for pulling pints. People come for safety, to talk about their lives if they’re feeling down, and some even call me mum. It has turned into a real community pub.”

The building has now been gutted and sits vacant. It had been open as the Sir Henry Royce since 2015 after previously being home to Yates's for many years.

The building is listed for sale on the Savills website, available of a free of tie lease. Offers of more than £65,000 per year rent are being invited.
