Coronavirus fears leave Peterborough city centre deserted

The effects of the coronavirus could be seen in Peterborough city centre today (Tuesday).

The morning after Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the country to avoid pubs, restaurants and theatres the impact could be seen across Bridge Street, Cathedral Square and Queensgate. The outbreak of coronavirus has been savage for the retail and leisure industries, with several places closing and restaurants turning to takeaways to keep themselves going. New Theatre Peterborough, restaurant Sundays and The Ostrich Inn are among the places in the city to have shut their doors due to the pandemic, while House of Feasts in Eye Green and Homme Nouveau in Whittlesey have begun home deliveries to adapt to the change in circumstances. Workers are also being told to work from home if possible, on top of calls to limit travel, which has left the city centre resembling a ghost town. And it may get even worse with the Church of England now calling on all services to be halted, which will affect the cathedral.
