I got a sneak preview last night of Chaat & Chill, in Bridge Street, a cocktail lounge serving Indian street food from breakfast onwards.
It has a great look – the mural in stunning – and it is spacious and comfortable enough, but the food which chef and partner in the business Loyd Luis cooked up to give guests a taste of what is to come was exceptional.
Especially if, like me, Indian street food is your thing. Loyd – who I know from the 1498 Spice Affair restaurant in Priestgate – certainly knows his way around a kitchen!
Everyone loves samosas and pakoras, which here were a little bit special – and large.
The crisp samosas were packed with spiced potato and peas, the pakoras bursting with flavour from the onion and spinach.
My favourite, and something I have tried elsewhere recently, pani puri – very crisp hollow puris stuffed with potatoes and chickpeas and on this occasion topped up with spicy tamarind water.
Oh and look out for bhel puri – a crunchy, tangy, spicy and sweet dish made with puffed rice, onions, tomatoes, chutney and spices. Delightful.
I didn’t get to try one but I hear the cocktails were spot on too.
Chaat & Chill (there’s plenty of chaat in the dishes and there’s a relaxed vibe so you can chill) opens tomorrow at 12noon. The first 100 customers will be treated to free chai and samosa chaat.
Going forward they will be doing breakfast – lots of mouth-watering stuffed flatbreads (paratha) , noodles, potato fritters, omelettes and more – and food and cocktails through to 10pm.
