And while the answer is usually an emphatic “yes”, occasionally the question relates to a place that has slipped under the radar.
Which is how I came to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon recently at Momoz & More, on the corner or Westgate and Lincoln Road in the city centre.
It opened a couple of years ago, and owner Santosh Kayastha has steadily built the business up; a process which, interestingly, started with video calls back to family in his homeland, Nepal, for recipes and cooking tips when his chef and business partner decided to sell up.
Thanks to a lot of hard graft that worked a treat, as the increasing number of regular customers – and top reviews – is testament too.
As for the name, well I am sure anyone who has visited one of the growing number of Nepalese restaurants in recent years will have been tempted by a momo, a steamed dumpling with usually a meat or vegetable filling, popular in Nepali cuisine.
Santosh has, over time, taken things to a new level – mostly based on customer feedback – which is really reflected in the name.
So the variety of fillings and flavours has expanded to appeal to customer tastes – chili, korma and Madras momos, for instance, and the new chaat momo.
And they are not just simply steamed – there is a half-fried sizzler momo and the lightly fried battered piro momo.
Having shared a platter, it is not difficult to see why they are proving so popular. A great, tasty and filling way to start a meal, the piro being the pick of the bunch for me.
But there is so much more to Momoz & More than a wide selection of momo, no matter how appetising they were.
And I was, naturally, invited to try more than my fair share. Luckily I had my teenage daughter to share the load!
The Royal Nepali Jimbo Thakali Khana was a take on an Indian thali I guess, which is a favourite way of mine to enjoy lunch; an eye-catching platter of dishes – a delightful chicken curry with that unmistakeable Nepalase spicing, a dark and intriguing lentil dahl, refreshingly different potato-based dish and a variety of sundries around a mound of rice. It isn't just the name that is a mouthful.
It is a meal in itself.
And talking of a meal in itself, I couldn’t resist the sight or sound of the still sizzling feast that arrived at the table: King prawns (Jasmine’s favourite and all she could manage by this time), chunks of chicken tikka, marinated wings and, best of all for me, lamb chops…. lovely soft meat with little crisp, charred edges. A beautiful end to a lunch to remember.
