Looking Back: ‘When was Peterborough’s Asda site cleared?’

Peterborough Telegraph reader Terry Aspittle got in touch and sent in our main image this week.

It shows the site being cleared to make way for the Asda store.

Terry didn’t know the date of the picture, does anybody know?

John Stokes also contacted Looking Back after seeing the recent feature on the Bishops Road toilet block.

John wrote: “Please find attached a picture of the archway taken on 27 March 1980.

At the time, I was an Architectural Technician working in the city council’s architects department involved in the construction of the new public toilets that were opened in 1980, with the new ‘access archways’ off the adjacent public footpath on the other side of the stone wall.

“These toilets were subsequently demolished some time around 2008 to 2010 and replaced with the existing ones we see today.”

Thanks to Terry and John for their contributions.

Have you got any pictures of Peterborough people and places from the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s?

If so, and you’d like to share them with Looking Back readers, send them to [email protected]
