Looking Back: ‘Men who repaired cathedral gateway’

A few weeks ago the Looking Back featured the coat of arms on the cathedral gateway.

This prompted reader Roy Sanderson to get in touch with some fascinating information and this week’s pictures.

Roy said: “I know this Coat of Arms on the Norman Arch very well as I and Frank Cook from Crowland, who I worked with as an apprentice, rebuilt the top half of the gateway in 1952.

“We worked for John Lucas who did all the repairs on the cathedral at that time.

“Rutland Masonry Works made all the stone at their yard in Cromwell Road, including the shield.

The picture shows the gateway as it looked in 1909.

The next picture was taken in 1991 and the other shows the scaffolding in place.

There is also a close-up of the coat of arms and the gateway in more recent times.
