Looking Back: ‘Crowds at Peterborough’s lights switch-on’

This year’s Christmas lights switch-on was a virtual affair - another casualty of the coronavirus pandemic.

But in past years it has seen huge crowds flock to Peterborough city centre.

The pictures show how popular the event was, and no doubt will be again post-virus.

The first picture above was taken in 2009 and shows thousands of residents gathered in Bridge Street – no social distancing there.

The next picture of Cathedral Square is from 10 years earlier in 1999.

Then there are some more festive lights events from years gone by in the city... Do you remember them?

Have you got any pictures of Peterborough people and places from the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s?

If so, and you’d like to share them with Looking Back readers, send them to
