Looking back: ‘A Fenland tradition like no other’

The Straw Bear festival is like no other and this year’s Straw Bear festival will be like no other Straw Bear festival! Covid restrictions mean organisers in Whittlesey have to stage a virtual festival.

Here are some pictures from festivals past.

The first picture is from 1909.

The following picturs show Phil Oldfield getting dressed for the 1996 festival and dancers in the Buttercross in 1994.

These are followed some images of the festival from recent years.

Let’s hope this great traditional event can return to normal next year.
