Years ago, of course, it was dominated by the Co-operative store on the corner of Park Road – later to become the Westgate House department store (the photos show the inside) and Beales.
It is now a discount furniture shop and in all likelihood in the future will become flats.
Today’s photos from the PT archives and those of local historian Rita McKenzie go further back, showing Halfords and the Bull Hotel in 1955 and the Trollope’s store in 1969, before that area was demolished.
There are plenty more old names to pick out too, including Allan’s, the Golden Crown, the Golden Fleece and BATA in 1980 and in the arcade entrance Benn Security (now a fashion retailer) and JW Morton – now a fruit and veg shop once more .
